I was able to find the heartbeat pretty quick. The LCD screen shows what is supposed to be the actual heart rate, however it is really fickle so I wouldn't depend on it. You have to turn the volume way up in order to hear the heartbeat clearly, however once you move the device you get a really loud feedback. All in all I am happy with my purchase. I wanted something that I could use to hear the heartbeat whenever I wanted to and that is what I got. If you find the hard spot and start there, it has been our experience to find the heartbeat within a minute. The instructions state that you need a lot of the gel and they aren't lying. If you don't have enough gel on your belly, there will be some more obnoxious noises. I don't know if I couldn't hear it because I am overweight by about 30 lbs or because the baby has been so low in my abdomen. I have been able to feel movement @ about 14 weeks but couldn't hear the hearbeat until later. I think it works fine for the price but would have liked to hear it earlier. I tried it without the gel and didn't work at all. I ordered the ultrasound gel and it works great. I tried it with KY jelly and it worked also.
